From the Preface...

We developed the courses contained here after many years of tweaking our “live” workshops.  Most of that training consisted of 1-2 days of training with groups of professionals.  Invariably we left those training sessions believing we had covered material too fast for some and too slow for others. At times we wanted to go into more depth on some topics. Always we felt that participants needed more time to reflect upon what they had learned and to practice new skills.

STEEP Trainer is designed to be a better form of training than live workshops.  Participants can proceed at their own pace and learn in their own way.  Also, they can take all the time they want to master particular areas.

Although most of the content is presented in a web-based format, learning does not start and end on the computer.  Instead, participants are encouraged to integrate the web based learning with other forms of learning.  Certainly you will want to complete the practice activities.  Beyond that you may benefit from actually “doing” each step as you learn it.  For example, after you learn to conduct screening, you may opt to go with your team and conduct the screening before moving on to intervention.  When you learn about the data management system, you may actually want to get on the data management system and enter teachers and students to make your learning relevant.

Many participants will want to make learning more interactive.  Try to build in time to discuss topics with colleagues. In particular, the courses tell you WHAT you need to do to get started with STEEP RTI.  You will want to spend some time discussing how you will accomplish certain objectives and who will do certain things.  For example, who will do progress monitoring at your schools?
